You might want to avoid buying or grilling any processed meat this July 4th. Hot dogs, sausage, and other processed meat have been shown to be even worse for your health when they’re grilled.
Probably not what you want to hear as we head into the 4th of July weekend but did you know regularly consuming processed meats is detrimental to your health? Grilling processed meats makes things even worse.
The Grio says grilling meats adds to the risk of cancer due to the high heat forming additional carcinogenic effects. A nutrition and epidemiology professor from Harvard’s T.H. Chan School of Public Health, Dr. Frank Hu, had an interview on the subject with the New York Times. He said, “the evidence is quite convincing that regular consumption of processed meats is detrimental to health, including colorectal cancer, Type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular disease.”
Plus, while curing, salting, or smoking these meats can prolong their shelf life and boost flavor, these effects can add to the carcinogenic effects.
Back in 2015, the World Health Organization officially deemed processed meats “carcinogenic to humans”.
But what are processed meats?
