Here’s Why Hot Chocolate and Hot Cocoa Are Two Entirely Different Drinks
I think it’s safe to say most of us were today years old when we found out about this one. Did you know that despite popular belief, Hot Chocolate and Hot Cocoa are two entirely different drinks?! Growing up in North Carolina at least, we used them interchangeably in my family. But there is a distinct difference…
A true Hot Chocolate recipe includes small pieces or shavings of chocolate that you mix with hot water, milk or cream. Think drinking a melted chocolate bar, it’s thicker.
Meanwhile, Hot Cocoa is made with cocoa powder. This is what people are drinking most of the time. Usually, Hot Cocoa is the cheaper option and it’s easier to make.
Most of the hot cocoa mixes you see in stores are Dutch-processed and contain added sugar and milk powder.
Which drink do you like better? What is your favorite brand of hot cocoa?
