What Is National Unfriend Day? The Holiday Jimmy Kimmel Created
Today, November 17th is National Unfriend Day. It’s an unofficial holiday Jimmy Kimmel created back in 2010. The point of the holiday is to unfriend anyone on Facebook who isn’t actually your friend.
CNN says there are certain criteria you should consider when choosing who to remove as your Facebook friend. First, consider how you feel. For example, if one of your friends posts something that gives you anxiety, stress, or frustration, maybe it’s time to let them go.
Next, think about equal effort. Even when someone posts something you disagree with, are they putting in the same effort to have a mature conversation about it as you are? If not, it might be easier and better for your mental health to unfriend and not engage.
Other more basic criteria for how to know when to unfriend someone include:
- Would you loan them $50?
- Would you invite them to your birthday party?
- Do they post constantly about stuff you don’t care about?
- Do they frequently spoil movies or tv shows for you?
Now that National Unfriend Day is an annual holiday, Jimmy Kimmel does bits for his show about the day every year. In this one below, they ask people on the street who their worst Facebook friends are. Any of them sound relatable?
