Students recovering from substance abuse will have a new high school in Charlotte.

The first recovery high school in North Carolina will open its doors in Charlotte on Sept. 3.

The school is called the  Emerald School of Excellence and will accept students recovering from substance abuse.

Research has shown that someone who goes back to the same environment, has a 70% relapse rate. That number shrinks to 30% if they go to a recovery high school.

The program will host meetings with students' families every month, exercise sessions, art programs, and a normal high school education. They can take in up to 10 students in the first year, and staff said they have room to grow. There is monthly tuition for the year-round school, but scholarships are available.
