This Venmo Cell Phone Scam Is Happening In Charlotte
It’s never been more important to protect your phone. There is a Venmo cell phone scam going around Charlotte.
I feel obligated to share this story with you, as I’ve heard of this happening now to at least 3 people in the past few months. People are out in Charlotte, trying to steal your money, and they’re getting very creative with how to do it.
Here’s the scam details:
Someone will come up to you, and say they need to use your phone. They will say they have to call or text a friend or family member. Once they have your phone, they will open up your Venmo account, and send themselves thousands of dollars through your account. Once the money is sent, you cannot get it back.
A couple weeks ago, I had read about this scam on Next Door. Next Door is a popular app that neighbors will use to communicate with their community. I was shocked when I read the story. This morning, I saw the exact same story, featuring a different victim featured on WRAL.com.
The fact of the matter is, someone is out in Charlotte, stealing money through this Venmo cell phone scam, and you need to protect yourself!
How to protect yourself:
-
Do not hand over your phone.
- If someone asks to use your phone, politely decline. If you do want to help, do not give them the phone, and instead offer to text or call their friend for them.
-
MAKE SURE you have Face ID set up on your Venmo, and other payment accounts.
- To set up Face ID, make sure Face ID and Pin options are turned on in your settings for any accounts associated with money.
