Peppermint Candy Canes

This might be a controversial statement, but peppermint candy canes are the candy corn of Christmas. They’re pretty to look at, especially hung on a tree, but they taste awful.

You know the holidays have arrived when you see candy canes back on store shelves. Whether they’re used to fill Christmas stockings, decorate gingerbread houses, or just to enjoy, the classic candy is a holiday tradition of its own. But is there a right way to eat a candy cane?

Candy canes are one of the most iconic symbols of the holiday season. These delicious treats have been around for centuries and are loved by people of all ages. They are typically red and white striped, with a curved end that resembles a shepherd's crook. The classic flavor for candy canes is peppermint, but there are now many other flavors available, such as cherry, grape, and even bacon!

The history of candy canes is somewhat mysterious, but it is believed that they originated in Germany in the 17th century.

Candy canes are not only delicious, but they also make great decorations. They can be hung on Christmas trees, used to decorate wreaths, or even used to create festive centerpieces. So whether you're enjoying a candy cane as a sweet treat or using it to add some holiday cheer to your home, these classic treats are sure to put a smile on your face this holiday season.

According to CandyUSA and a new survey from the National Confectioners Association set out to get the answer.

Their poll of 15-hundred Americans asks how they eat the festive sweet and finds:

  • More than half (55%) start with the straight end of the candy cane
  • Just over a quarter (28%) eat the curved end first
  • And 17% break their candy cane into pieces

The holiday candy research also reveals:

  • Nearly all respondents (93%) plan to share chocolate and candy with loved ones during the holidays
  • Almost three-quarters (73%) prefer classic peppermint candy canes, while 27% like fun flavors
  • When it comes to foil-wrapped chocolate, 46% say Santas are the best, 30% like coins and 24% prefer snowmen
