Americans Wish They Were More Adventurous
Lots of us have bucket lists, and according to new research, 41% of Americans wish they were more adventurous. Most people have an adventure bucket list, or a series of adventures they’d like to experience but they seldom do. And according to Talker, if their plans work out, they hope to check off all the items on their list by the time they’re 56.
I am probably one of the most adventurous people you will ever meet. I say no to little. I have been skydiving, I have lived in India, and eaten Jellyfish in China. Pretty much if you tell me it’s a once in a lifetime opportunity, I’m in! However, most Americans don’t think like I do.
A poll of 2-thousand U.S. adults reveals they wish they were more adventurous:
- More than nine in 10 (94%) say they find time to get outside and connect with nature on a regular basis and 40% are spending more time outside now than they did five years ago.
- But three in five (58%) wish they were more adventurous and 62% want to spend more time outside than they currently do.
- So what’s keeping people from getting out there and taking those bucket list adventures? Their top concerns include insects and pests (56%), running into wildlife (40%), getting lost (36%), needing a bathroom (35%), and running out of food (19%) and water (34%).
- Despite their fears, people would be most willing to try camping (35%), fishing (32%), hiking (26%) and road-tripping (25%).
- One of the most popular adventure bucket list items is climbing a mountain range, something 25% of Americans want to do, even though only 11% say they have the skills to do it.
- This year, about a third (32%) of respondents are planning to go to a National Park, and the top ones they want to visit are Yellowstone (39%), the Grand Canyon (38%) and the Great Smoky Mountains (28%).
- When asked what defines an adventurer, people say it’s someone who loves the outdoors (63%), is curious (44%), and is high-energy (40%).
- The survey split respondents into categories based on how adventurous they are:
- 11% consider themselves “expert adventurers” who go do multiple outside adventures a month and spend an average of 18 days a month outside.
- 16% are “average adventurers” and this group explores outside about once a month.
- “Social adventurers” make up about a third of those polled, who occasionally get outside with friends and family
- And 19% consider themselves “inside cats” who prefer to avoid the outdoors entirely.
