Photos: A Humpback Whale Skull Washed Up On A North Carolina Beach
You never know what is going to wash up from the vast oceans. It’s always fascinating and this week at the Cape Hatteras National Seashore visitors got a look at a massive surprise. A humpback whale skull washed up on the shore of the North Carolina beach.
The Official Cape Hatteras National Seashore Facebook page shared the incredible photo on Wednesday. I would have never known that this is what a whale skull looks like! But you learn something new every day.

While not the complete skull, the page states that it is a “large portion” that was discovered on the Hattaras Island beach. Being a barrier island it isn’t uncommon for remains of animals to wash onshore at Hatteras and other locations along the Outer Banks of North Carolina.
What a stunning reminder of how vast the ocean is and how massive some of the animals that call it home are. I was lucky enough when in Florida last summer to have a manatee swim within a few yards of us and the size of that creature was mind-blowing. I’m so glad I got to experience this.
The Cape Hatteras National Seashore says that “any marine mammal strandings OR sea turtle activity sightings should be reported to the Cape Hatteras Stranding Hotline: 252-216-6892.”
What’s the most amazing thing you’ve seen on a beach or in the ocean?
