It's no secret Americans love their dogs. But what is their favorite dog breed? Data suggests that 2/3 of households have a dog. And the vast majority of those consider that furry friend a part of their family. (If you don't well I'm not so silently judging you).

There is a lot of data on the most common/popular dog breeds. However, an individual's favorite dog breed doesn't always translate into the type of dog they have. Perhaps you love Great Danes but just don't have adequate space for one. Or despite having a soft spot for a Cocker Spaniel but your kid is highly allergic to dogs. You may have a hypoallergic dog instead.

Or in my case I adore beagles. The first and only dog I've ever had was a beagle. I'll always love them but I will never be able to have another one. It just wouldn't feel right.

This is why our friends at Forbes Advisor recently conducted a survey to determine the favorite dog breed in each US state and the country as a whole. While certain breeds are more common than others, we were intrigued to discover which ones are the most favored in America.

To conduct this survey, Forbes Advisor surveyed 10,000 dog owners across the country to find out which breeds are the favorite of the US. Options on the survey were limited to the top 25 most popular breeds nationwide, according to data from the American Kennel Club (AKC). An option for "no breed in particular" was also given.

The Favorite Dog Breed Of The Carolinas

And that no preference option actually reigned supreme nationally with 13% of respondents not committing. Nationwide Australian shepherds are ranked as the top favorite dog breed, followed by German shepherds, and bulldogs.

And it was the bulldog that took the title in South Carolina and North Carolina. (I thought that was a Georgia thing? While I love Uga the University of Georgia bulldog), I'd think most South Carolinians would have a little bias against them for that reason. I guess others don't equate everything to college athletics and rivalries!

What's your favorite dog breed? Is it different or the same as the dog currently a member of your family? Let us know on social media! Thanks to our friends at Forbes Advisor for sharing their research with us. You can view the full study and rankings for each state here.
