North Carolina Students Sent Home After Snake Found In Classroom
I say it time and time again. I do not like animals I’m not expecting to see. And I am never expecting to (or wanting to) see a snake. So we can all be glad I was not at the Unity Classical Charter School yesterday. Classes were dismissed early and students sent home after a snake was found in a classroom at the Southwest Charlotte Charter School. This incident was first reported by WSOC-TV. They report a teacher discovered the snake after returning from recess with her class. A statement released by the school said that students were sent home “out of an abundance of caution”.
That is probably good for safety reasons as at first glance they probably didn’t know if this was a venenous or non-venomous snake. Plus I can only imagine the anxiety and fear it could cause for students and teachers as a high percentage of people are afraid of snakes. I know I wouldn’t be able to pay attention to any curriculum if I was constantly looking for a slimy reptile that could be anywhere.
An update was posted to the school’s Facebook page last night. They reassured families that the snake had been captured and removed from school grounds. They say that it was a Northern Water Snake that did not pose a treat. They also mention that these snakes can be confused with copperheads. Which are common in this area, especially this time of year. The school will be open Friday as normal.
A snake in the classroom is one of the most unusual reasons I’ve heard for school closing. But like a snow day, or weather early dismissal I’m sure the students were thrilled with the unexpected time off. Have you ever had school or work delayed due to an animal sighting?
