This has been a hot topic at home and at work for a few days now. And bears in North Carolina neighborhoods have some concerned. I am trying to learn more and more about them. So hopefully this helps to understand what is happening. And what to do if you encounter bears in the Charlotte and surrounding areas.

Bears In North Carolina Neighborhoods Have Some Concerned

It seems almost daily we are hearing reports of bears in North Carolina neighborhoods. There are plenty of pictures to prove they are roaming around in the Charlotte area. Just a few months ago our neighbor in Clover, South Carolina alerted us to a bear traveling through an upper pasture. Bears do migrate and people are seeing them not only in the mountains. But also in the Charlotte area and even the coast. Is there cause for alarm and what do we do if we encounter a black bear?

This Is One Of The Latest Sightings

According to our source at the Charlotte Observer, an alert was issued on Friday after a bear was spotted near Mallard Creek Greenway. The home owners association in the area issued this warning via email to residents. "All neighbors be aware". The bear in question appears to be a young male black bear. This same bear was also spotted in two other neighborhoods. He seems to be on the move and not settling into just one place.

Rules Of Engagement

Another bear was spotted a couple of weeks later in the Lake Norman area. Other bear sighting reportedly include Tega Cay and Fort Mill. Young males are migratory and will most likely settle down in the mountains or even the coast.

As in the mountains, the same rules apply here when it comes to keeping bears out of your yard. Make sure your trash is secure and not available to hungry bears. Wildlife experts warn against leaving bird seed in bird feeders. Keep an eye on pets and make sure they are on a leash if out of a fenced in yard. According to bearwise.com, bear sightings are still uncommon in the Charlotte area. Here is their advice taken directly from their website on what to do if you encounter a bear.

“Know what to do when you see a bear. NEVER run from a bear. Don’t approach a bear – just quietly move away and leave the area. However, if a black bear does approach you, make yourself look big, make loud noises, clap your hands, and continue to back away.” For more information check out details here.
