Harmful And Invasive Species Of Mussels Identified For The First Time In North Carolina

This is a bronze, two blade propeller on a stainless steel shaft covered in zebra mussels on a 36 foot sailboat. There is a bronze shaft strut supporting the assembly that has been painted along with the rest of the boat bottom. It is a blue colored antifouling paint designed to impede the growth of algae and marine organisms in fresh water. Zebra mussels have attached themselves to the shaft and propeller which were not painted. Also, there is a sacrificial magnesium anode on the shaft which the zebra mussels cannot attach themselves. The sailboat is on dry land resting on a red cradle where it will remain until spring.

The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission announced that they have confirmed a report of Zebra mussels in North Carolina. This is the first time the species has been identified in the state. The mussels were found in a quarry on private property in Iredell County. According to a Facebook post (seen below), "the Wildlife Commission believes the mussels are contained to the quarry."  The department is working on options for treatments to take care of invasive species as well as investigating the occurrence. Divers confirmed the suspicion of the existence of the zebra mussels on Thursday. The scuba divers fro the US Fish and Wildlife Service investigated and were able to confirm these are in fact zebra mussels.

Zebra mussels multiply and spread easily. The adults attach themselves to boats, dock lifts, and other water-related equipment to spread to other bodies of water. And the larvae which are microscopic in size can be transported in any water that is moved to another location. What makes the species such a problem? Well, they disrupt the food chain and alter the chemistry of the water. Once being introduced to an environment they quickly take it over. They filter out algae that native species need for food as well as attach to and destroy the ecosystem's native mussels according to the USGS. They can also infiltrate both public drinking and wastewater systems.
While this is the first time Zebra Mussels have been discovered in the wild in North Carolina, the fingernail-sized mollusks were found in moss balls sold at pet stores back in 2021. According to the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission, it is unlawful to transport, purchase, possess, sell, or stock zebra mussels in public or private North Carolina waters.

North Carolina Aquarium Recognized As One Of The Best In The US

I love animals, especially when given the chance to see them up close in a safe and controlled environment. I always enjoy visiting places like zoos and aquariums when I'm in a new city and have had the opportunity to visit ones all across the country. Here in North Carolina, we have a fantastic zoo in Asheboro- The North Carolina Zoo. But did you know that we also have a wonderful aquarium in the state? Well, technically we have more than one. But the main location is in Kure Beach North Carolina and is one of the best in the country. At least according to rankings by Travel Awaits.

They ranked the 12 best aquariums in the US for 2023 and included the North Carolina Aquarium among some good company as one of the best. The aquariums recognized spanned both coasts and some spots in between. And aquariums don't just have fish. Many also have large mammals such as sharks, whales, and dolphins. But even other creatures that don't spend all of their time in the water. This includes adorable penguins, otters, and seals. But also reptiles like alligators and turtles. Many or most aquariums and committed to the conservation of species and help to ensure their survival.

A visit to an aquarium can be a fun activity for adults and kids alike. And if you can't escape the Monday workday, but want a little joy in your life, most have life camera feeds where you can watch the animals. I may or may not be watching a penguin right now for **research** purposes. Keep reading to see and learn about not only the North Carolina aquarium that is among the best but a couple of others that are an easy driving distance from NC. One has some events I'm dying the check out later this fall. You can read the full list from Travel Awaits here.
