North Carolina Ranks As Most Popular Moving Destination Nationwide
With the increased opportunity to work from home in a pre-pandemic world more people than ever are choosing to live where they want to. And it seems a lot of people want to live here. According to new research shared with us by our friends at StorageCafe, North Carolina ranks as one of the top 3 moving destinations nationwide. Their researchers analyzed the net migration of all 50 states as well as Washington, DC. Additionally, they looked at the why behind these trends.
According to StorageCafe, “the pandemic opened up the floodgates of interstate mobility” with state-to-state moves hitting an all-time-high in 2022. Some had to lose residents for others to gain, but North Carolina was firmly on the receiving end as one of the top moving destinations nationwide.
So what is North Carolina doing that has been so successful at attracting and retaining residents? North Carolina ranked 3rd nationally behind only Florida and Texas. The Old North State had a net influx of approximately 79,000 people. Incoming migration numbers came in at approximately 345,000 whereas outgoing was 266,000.
One major positive of North Carolina is a median home value of $277,000 (statewide though don’t get your hopes up in Charlotte or Raleigh). The data collected shows that around 40% of new residents become homeowners in their first year residing in the state. Meanwhile, I’m struggling to find something before my apartment lease goes up inevitably in a few months.
Where are these people coming from? In 2022, 36,000 people moved from Virginia to North Carolina, and 31,500 came in from Florida. These are the top states sending people our way. Another interesting statistic is that these new residents are coming in with a slightly higher income than that of the rest of the state. And 38% of them have earned a bachelor’s degree or higher education.
