Charlotte Airport Opens $253 Million Taxiway To Cut Congestion
On January 21, 2025, Charlotte Douglas International opened its North End Around Taxiway, solving a major traffic jam problem in the air. By reducing the need to cross runways, the new route makes the Southeast’s busiest airport much safer.
Planes can now keep their distance without getting stuck waiting to cross active runways. This addition follows other improvements at the airport, including a new concourse and updated terminals designed to handle more passengers. But this taxiway is just the beginning. As more planes come through, the airport must keep growing to handle the crowds.
This $253 million project, paid for by passenger fees and federal grants, gives planes a new way around the west runway as they head to their gates. With passenger numbers growing 10% each year, the previous setup wasn’t working anymore. Changes were needed to prevent planes from getting stuck on the ground. The FAA supported this solution to reduce delays and help planes move faster. Aircraft can now travel between gates and runways without getting caught in traffic.
Construction teams put in long hours building this complex path while following strict safety rules and environmental guidelines.
The new route helps cement Charlotte’s position as a key air travel center. It adds to recent terminal and gate improvements that have changed the face of the airport.
Thanks to close coordination between construction crews, airport staff, and regulators, this huge project was completed and ready for use. Everything needed to be double-checked before planes could start using it.
