CATS Launches $2.20 On-Demand Transit Service in Three Charlotte Zones
In February, Charlotte residents will be able to catch a ride on CATS Micro, a new on-demand service that costs just $2.20 per trip.
“This new microtransit service is a significant step forward in our commitment to providing equitable and accessible transportation for all residents,” said Elizabeth Presutti to qcitymetro.com.
Mini-buses will serve three main areas: UNC Charlotte-University Research Park, Matthews-Mint Hill, and the airport district. These buses link residents to major transit routes, making daily travel simpler. Two companies share the operation, MV Transportation runs the buses while Spare manages the booking app through CATS-Pass. Passengers pay the same as regular bus fare.
In 2022, transit planners selected these areas after careful review. They dedicated months to studying transportation gaps, community feedback, and ridership data. The project grew from the Envision My Ride study, which looked at ways to improve Charlotte’s transit system. The research highlighted areas where public transportation wasn’t meeting community needs.
The service addresses a common problem; helping people get from their homes to main bus and train stations. These three zones showed the most need for better service. Wheelchair users have full access to the service. Equipped vehicles are ready to help all riders, ensuring everyone can travel around the city. The service works smoothly with existing transit options.
Users can track and book their rides directly from their phones. If these first three zones prove successful, the service might expand to other neighborhoods. Officials will monitor ridership numbers and user feedback to guide future growth.
