To cope with the high cost of living, many young Americans are turning to Mom and Dad to help pay the bills. The thing is, new research shows parents of adult children are eager to help, even if it means risking their own financial future.

Bankrate’s new Financial Independence Survey on how much parents are sacrificing:

  • 61% of parents or guardians of kids age 18 or older are currently sacrificing financially, or have done so in the past, to help their adult children.
  • It’s even higher for Gen X parents, 69% of them are doing it, even digging into retirement accounts or emergency savings to help their adult kids.
  • Parents are helping their grown children by paying everyday bills for them, giving them large amounts of money for big purchases or letting them live at home rent-free.
  • As a result of the high cost of housing, 49% of young adults 23 or older say they’re currently receiving or have received ongoing financial assistance from their parents to help pay for housing.
  • More than a third (37%) of them received rent payments or were allowed to live with their parents for free and 17% got money from Mom and Dad to buy their first home.
  • About half (48%) say they now get, or have gotten, help with everyday expenses like groceries and utilities from their parents.
  • Unfortunately, giving money to their adult kids means these parents aren’t able to save for retirement (37%) or reach some other milestone (44%).

All grades are the determination of The LeapFrog Group and you can view those and ones from any other city and state in the US here.

Keep reading to see the North Carolina Hospital Safety grades as determined by The Leap Frog Group. Hospitals included on this list are in the greater Charlotte area. The two closest South Carolina Hospitals are also included on this list since they are technically in the Charlotte area.
