Most Adults That Use TikTok Haven’t Done This
Do you love to watch videos on TikTok, but have yet to actually post one yourself? A new survey reveals you’re in good company, as a lot of adults on the site are only there to watch. According to Pew Research, a third of U.S. adults say they use TikTok, but only a very small percentage of those users are producing any content on the site.
Pew Research Center asked 2,745 U.S. adult TikTok users about the way they use it and directly observed the accounts and posting habits of 869 respondents who voluntarily shared their account handles for the research.
This is what Pew Research Center learned:
- About half of all adult TikTok users ages 35 to 49 in the U.S. have never posted a video themselves, and only 40% have posted videos that are publicly visible.
- While people between the ages of 18 to 34 are much more likely than older adults to use TikTok, only about half of these younger users have ever posted on the site.
- It turns out, the top 25% of U.S. adults on TikTok produce 98% of all publicly accessible videos. That means the other 75% of users create just 2% of that content.
- The majority of users have never added any information to the “bio” field on their account.
- Those who do post videos on TikTok are more active on the site than non-posters, in general. Posters tend to follow more users, have more followers, and are five times more likely to fill out their bio.
- When it comes to their “For You” page, 85% say the content is at least somewhat interesting, while 40% of users find it extremely or very interesting, only 14% say it’s not too or not at all interesting.
- The average user follows 154 accounts, but only has 36 followers. About half (49%) have never received any likes.
- A typical TikTok poster follows almost four times as many accounts as a user who doesn’t post and they also have more followers.
