Relocating can be pretty pricey, especially with high mortgage rates and inflation. But if you want to make a move and you’re flexible about where you go, several cities and suburbs across the country are offering incentives to entice new residents. They’ll pay you to move there, which could help cover moving expenses, and some throw in other perks, too.
According to Realtor.com, these cities are giving cash and other perks to new residents:
- Greater Rochester, New York - The program: Greater ROC Relocate
It offers up to $9-thousand in grants to buy a home in the nine-county region, as well as as much as $10-thousand in awards for people in specific career fields.
- Jacksonville, Illinois - The program: Make My Move
This program offers a package worth $9,300, which includes $5-thousand in cash after living there for 12 months, a one-year membership to a driving range, a teeth-whitening package and a three-month gym membership.
- Topeka, Kansas - The program: Choose Topeka
They’re offering up to $10-thousand for renting in the first year or up to $15-thousand to buy a home. Two other programs are also available, one offering $5-thousand to former Topeka residents and one giving $5-thousand to veterans transitioning out of the military.
- Tulsa, Oklahoma - The program: Tulsa Remote
It offers $10-thousand in rental grants or a $10-thousand lump sum payment after buying a qualifying home, and a three-year membership to a local co-working space.
- West Virginia - The program: Ascend WV
New residents can get a total of $12-thousand in cash incentives, the first $10-thousand comes in monthly payments during the first year and $2-thousand is paid after the second year. It also comes with access to a free co-working space and a one-year Digital Outdoor Recreation Pass that includes free gear rentals and activities like snowboarding and white-water rafting.
2 North Carolina Cities Named Most Well Run in The Country
Like it or not the leadership of any geographic area (municipalities, states, countries, etc.) can have a large impact on citizen's lives. So if you are choosing to call an area home, ideally you'd like for it to be well run. In a recent study conducted by WalletHub, they determined the most well run cities in the Country. This included the answer to the question of the most well run North Carolina cities.
WalletHub released its report on 2024’s Best- & Worst-Run Cities in America, ahead of the quickly approaching 2024 election. It hopes that residents will use the data to evaluate the effectiveness of their local leadership.
And running a city is no easy feat. Heck I'm not saying I could do it. Nor would I want to! But those that choose to pursue such a position, should be held to a high standard. They have in many cases millions of people who depend on them.
The method chosen by WalletHub to examine the effectiveness of local leadership in this case was " determining a city’s operating efficiency".Looking at how city officials manage and spend public funds. And from there compare the quality of the services provided to residents against the city’s total budget.
In order to create this list of the most well run cities "WalletHub compared 148 of the largest U.S. cities based on their operating efficiency." Each city was assigned a “Quality of City Services” score.
So just what are the most well run North Carolina cities and the worst? The good news is that of the 4 North Carolina cities featured in this study, two ranked fantastic, one certainly above average, but one major city? It was near the bottom of the rankings.

27. Greensboro, NC

Quality of City Services Rank: 70 Total Budget per Capita Rank: 23 Congratulations to Greensboro, this is a very well respectable rank for a city often undervalued in a lot of these sort of lists.

Our state's capital city ranked 11th just narrowly missing the top 10. Glad the center of our state government is well run on the city level as well!
