Experts Tell Us How To Get Over A Break Up Quickly
Breakups are hard. Getting over a breakup quickly… can be even harder. Sure, you can blast “All Too Well” on repeat and it will make you feel better, but there are some better actions you can take, according to experts.
Seventeen asked licensed clinical psychologist and Head of Research at “The Mental Health Coalition” Dr. Naomi Torres-Mackie and a neuropsychologist Director of “Comprehend the Mind” in NYC Dr. Sanam Hafeez to share their tips for how you can get over a breakup quickly.
Here’s what they said.
- Let yourself feel all of the emotions. Don’t just bottle up your emotions. Acknowledge the pain and allow yourself time to feel everything you’re feeling – the good, the bad, the hurt, etc.
- Be patient with yourself. Don’t try and rush the process. It can be days, weeks, or months until you feel yourself again… and that’s normal! “After a breakup, try to avoid self-judgment about how long you are still in your feelings about it,” Dr. Torres-Mackie says. “Healing is an individual process. It takes as long as it takes, and that’s ok.”
- Spend time with fam and friends. Surround yourself with your support system! Go to brunch, watch movies, talk about your feelings and even cry to them. They’re there to help you.
- Keep busy. You need time to wallow but don’t just close yourself off. “Find activities you enjoy, such as hobbies or volunteering, to keep yourself occupied and distracted from negative thoughts,” Dr. Hafeez encourages.
- Avoid the temptation to check their social media. Do not look at your ex’s social media. “This can be a tempting behavior but can also trigger painful emotions and prevent you from moving on,” Dr. Hafeez explains.
