Wife Keeps “Score” Of Everything She’s Done For Husband Of 30+ Years
A woman has turned to Reddit for advice after revealing something to her family that led to a fight. In a post to the “Am I an a-hole” section, she writes that she’s in her late 50s, has been married for 30-something years and asks if she’s wrong for “keeping score of everything I’ve ever done for my husband.” She explains that she’s been a “traditional wife” who left her job to help him start his very successful business and that all their kids are adults now.
“My husband built his business from the ground up, and I was instrumental to the early success which set it up to be what it is today,” she writes. At a recent family lunch, her son said his wife doesn’t want to be a “trad wife” who raises the kids, and has to depend solely on him for money.
- He asked his mom to talk to her and convince her to change her mind, but she explained to her son that “being a housewife is incredibly risky and vulnerable.”
- That’s when the mom shared that she has “a meticulous record of all the contributions I have ever made to the family business,” so if the worst ever happens, she “wouldn’t be relying on the mercy of man to feed myself.”
- She explained that she’s “made many contingency plans over the years to minimize the risk of being a housewife and compensate for my lack of pension and benefits.”
- Her husband and son got angry about this, saying it shows a “lack of trust” and her husband feels she’s “had one foot out the door” their entire marriage and that her “little escape plan” is to “shaft him out of his business.”
- She points out that him calling it HIS business is why she kept those records and that’s why she won’t tell her daughter-in-law to be a housewife if she doesn’t want to be one.
- Hundreds of commenters jumped to the mom’s defense, praising her “legal savviness” for keeping track of her contributions all these years.
