We all deserve a vacation every once in a while and even if you don’t have much to spend, you can find a trip you can afford. A new survey of 2-thousand adults who travel looks at how much Americans tend to spend on vacations and it’s a pretty big range. The average American has a budget limit of $2,743, while 16% won’t spend more than $1,000.

  • Regardless of their budget, Americans are determined to take some sort of vacation this year and 48% say they’d rather take on extra work than not be able to afford one.
  • Respondents say they need an average of three getaways this year, and 58% are willing to downsize their trips to get them, as they say even a one-night stay is enough of a break.
  • More than half (53%) of Americans prioritize saving up for travel, more than for other things like hobbies (29%), retirement savings (24%) and home improvements (24%).
  • While they’re saving for a vacation, people spend nearly four hours researching budget-friendly options.
  • Strategies used to find affordable travel options include comparing prices on websites (48%) and looking for package deals (36%).
  • Many Americans see domestic travel as a more affordable option, with 55% of respondents only planning to travel within the U.S. this year.
  • People believe vacations contribute to their overall well-being by strengthening relationships (54%), reducing stress (53%), building memories (48%) and helping them escape from daily routines (46%).
