There’s A New Barbie Just For Preschoolers
Barbie has been around for a long time and she’s come in many different forms over the years. However according to CNN, for the first time ever, there’s a new Barbie doll made just for the preschool set. “My First Barbie” was designed to be age-appropriate for tots three and older and Mattel says it’s better suited for their needs.
“We talk to parents and kids almost every day,” explains Lisa McKnight, executive vice president and global head of Barbie and dolls for Mattel, “Interestingly, what came up more and more from parents who grew up with Barbie themselves was that they wanted a Barbie doll that was easier to play with for little hands with less dexterity.”
This isn’t the first time the toymaker has offered My First Barbie-branded dolls, but this is the first version of the classic doll specifically designed for preschoolers. And she’s noticeably different from the original Barbie:
- My First Barbie is bigger, 13.5-inches tall compared to the standard Barbie’s 11.5-inches.
- She also has a softer body and more articulated arms and legs.
- The doll’s hands are also different, her hands are closed, so the thumb doesn’t stick out, making it easier for little hands to dress and undress her.
- Her accessories are also larger and her hair is extra long for easier brushing.
- The preschooler-friendly Barbie comes in four skin tones and her clothing has Velcro fasteners so it’s easy for younger kids to change her.
My First Barbie is available now at retailers including Target and Amazon for $20.
