Low Expectations Are The Key To Holiday Photos
Are you obsessed with getting the perfect family holiday photo? Lots of parents are and they round their kids up, put them in coordinated outfits in front of a scenic background and maybe even a bow around the dog’s neck. And while it might seem like the perfect set up, little kids aren’t known for their modeling skills and will soon be wiggling, crying and pulling at the itchy sweaters mom made them wear, so forget about them smiling and looking at the camera at the same time.
But it IS possible to get a mantle-worthy family picture, with the help of some professional photographers. According to Yahoo, as a mom of three and a photographer, Melissa Cole knows that the best-laid plans often blow up, so her advice to parents? Be realistic, flexible and keep expectations natural and low. “If you go in with an idea of the perfect family portrait, then you may be disappointed during the shoot,” she says.
Photographer Hedley Wilson agrees and says the most effective way to get comfortable in front of the camera is to let them wear regular clothes they’re comfy in. Force them to wear something they don’t like and it’s bound to show in the photo. The photographers share these tips for getting a good family holiday picture:
Talk to the kids ahead of time about what’s involved and what behavior is expected in a photo shoot.
A meltdown may happen in the middle of the shoot and if it does, try to remember it’s not the end of the world.
While it may not seem like it at the moment, photos that include things like a tearful toddler or a kid sticking their tongue out will soon be seen as perfect. “Parents put a lot of pressure on getting the perfect holiday photo,” Cole says. “I would say: Appreciate the season of life you are in. If your child has an awkward smile this year, well, I hope that you embrace it, because life goes so fast, and before you know it, they will outgrow that awkward smile, and you will miss it.”
