How “Treat Brain” Is Wrecking Your Financials
Giving into the phrase “treat yourself” is typically viewed as a form of self-care. Hard day at work? Order yourself an expensive dinner. Worked out every day this week? Go shopping for a new outfit to further boost your self-confidence. Passed your final exam? Destress by visiting the spa for an expensive facial.
According to stylist.co.uk, “Treat brain” is a mindset we feed into… sometimes way too often. We tell ourselves that it’s okay to overindulge because hey, we deserve it— especially after all the B.S. we’ve recently been through.
Fashion psychologist Carolyn Mair explains to “Stylist” that “treat brain” is not unusual and it is “a very real phenomenon” that’s seen an uptick with the pandemic.
“The pandemic has shown us how fragile and short life can be and so many of us, in different ways, have chosen to live it to excess,” she explains. “We have been so constrained by lockdowns and other restrictions that we feel a sense of freedom now that justifies what we might have previously thought of as frivolous behavior.”
She adds that “Treating yourself is one small thing that is within your control that you can do to produce those feelings of pleasure” considering many of us were robbed earlier on in the pandemic of other pleasures.
It’s also a distraction. “The hit of dopamine from buying something new helped divert our attentions from surging death tolls and shoddy government decisions.”
