Bride Asks Guests To Venmo Money To Pay For Wedding
The days of the bride’s family being expected to cover the cost of the wedding may be a thing of the past, but it’s still typically the couple or their families that pay for the event. So one friend of a bride-to-be was very confused when she was asked to chip in to pay for the wedding. She took to Reddit’s “Am I the a-hole” section to explain the story and ask if she was in the wrong.
The Redditor shares that they’re from India and are now living in the U.S. and in their culture parents usually pay for their kids’ weddings, but sometimes the couple borrows money to pay for it, and then they pay it back. So when this bride-to-be, who they call “Katie” mentioned to her friends that she’ll be sending them her Venmo so they can “pitch in” for the wedding, this friend had questions. They asked Katie if she’d be returning the money. Another friend explained that it’s “normal to chip in for your friends’ wedding” in the U.S., but it still didn’t make sense to the Redditor.
So they asked Katie to clarify why guests need to contribute to the wedding fund and it all went downhill from there. Katie got mad, called her friend an “a**” for embarrassing her in front of everyone,” and even worse? Her fiancé called later that day and uninvited the friend from the wedding. So they turned to Reddit to ask if they were wrong for offending the bride and groom and pretty much everyone in the comments agree they’re NOT the a-hole here.
