A Scientist “Oopsy” Creates New Fish Breed
Meet the new fish made by the accident.
The “sturddlefish” is a mix between the American paddlefish and the Russian sturgeon. The International Union for the Conservation of Nature says both types are fish are considered endangered, especially the sturgeon since the eggs are used for high-end caviar.
Scientists in Hungary, trying to save the fish, tried to reproduce them using gynogenesis but researchers accidentally mixed paddlefish sperm with sturgeon eggs. What they didn’t expect was that the process still worked. The sturddlefish possess a long nose, spike-like back, and can weigh over six pounds.
