You Won’t Believe How Old This Girl Scout Is
It’s Girl Scout cookie time again and the most excited scout around maybe Ronnie Backenstoe, who first started selling cookies back in 1932. She joined the Girl Scouts when she was 10 and now at 98, she’s still thrilled to be a part of it.
Ronnie recently donned her uniform and teamed up with a local troop to sell as many of the iconic cookies as she can at her retirement home in Pennsylvania. She says she’s happiest when she’s selling Girl Scout cookies with the other scouts, adding, “Oh, I love it!”
She joined the Girl Scouts 88 years ago in her hometown of Lake George, New York, and she stuck with it, eventually becoming a troop leader and camp director. She retired back in 1976 after 45 years of active scouting, but she still supports the Girl Scouts’ core mission of empowering the future generation. “That’s really what girl scouting is,” she explains. “It teaches you how to live.”
At least she’s of age and can pair her girl scout cookies with wine now.
