Sore Throat? Get Some Ice Cream!
A sore throat is a pain in more ways than one. A reoccurring pain every time you swallow is the worst. Of course, eating isn’t really an option…or is it?
Eating? With a sore throat? You’ve got to be kidding…
Well, when your body is fighting off an infection, it needs to be well-fed. Dr. Nate Favini says the most common cause of a sore throat is a viral infection and there’s not much you can do about that except ride it out and stay hydrated, but if you choose the right foods, they could help ease your inflamed throat.
According to Dr. Favini, cold foods like ice cream “can be particularly good because they help soothe the sore throat and may even reduce inflammation.” Just try not to overdo it with the sugar.
Of course, if for some insane reason ice cream isn’t for you, here are some other doctor-approved foods to try next time you’re dealing with a sore throat:
- Chicken soup: It’s the broth that helps here, so if you’re vegetarian, veggie broth will work as well.
- Honey: Science has found Manuka honey can help with infections, including those that cause the common cold.
- Yogurt: The probiotics in it help support the immune system and keep harmful germs from taking over, plus the cool, soft texture makes it easy to swallow when your throat is suffering.
- Mashed potatoes: Keep the skin on when mashing to get a boost of magnesium, vitamin C, and antioxidants, which all support a strong immune system.
- Eggs: They’re packed with minerals including zinc, iron, and selenium, as well as vitamins D and B12, which help fight off the infection that’s causing your sore throat.
- Oatmeal: Soft foods are best when you have a sore throat because they won’t irritate it further, plus oatmeal has lots of magnesium, zinc, and antioxidants to detox the body.
- Ginger: Research has shown it can relieve pain and is an anti-inflammatory, and one study finds the combo of ginger and honey is more effective than either one alone.
