Lego Is Finally Going To Make Bricks From Recycled Plastic
Wait… Lego’s aren’t made from recycled plastic??
Well now Lego is one step closer to making their toy building bricks more sustainable. The company just unveiled a prototype brick that’s made entirely of recycled plastic. It’s made with recycled bottles that are sourced from U.S. suppliers. But don’t go rushing to stores just yet. Lego says it will still be “some time” before these new bricks are mass-produced for consumers.
Engineers and scientists tested more than 250 variations of materials before nailing down the formula for the latest prototype. Lego says the latest design is the first made from recycled material that’s passed its “strict” quality, safety and play requirements, after several weren’t durable enough. On average, a one-liter plastic bottle provides enough material for 10 2×4 Lego bricks.
“We are super excited about this breakthrough,” said Tim Brooks, Lego’s VP of environmental responsibility. “The biggest challenge on our sustainability journey is rethinking and innovating new materials that are as durable, strong and high quality as our existing bricks — and fit with LEGO elements made over the past 60 years. With this prototype, we’re able to showcase the progress we’re making.”
I wonder if they won’t hurt as much if I step on one now? Haha
