How to Tell If You’re Burned Out at Work (and What to Do Next)
Burnout isn’t just the term for that kid in high school who smoked himself into outer space anymore. It’s a serious workplace issue and it’s affecting millennials more than any other generation. In fact, 96% of us report job burnout and it’s why we’ve been lovingly nicknamed The Burnout Generation.
Let’s start by figuring out how you can tell you are burned out.
- Low energy. Do you feel like no matter how much coffee you drink, you never have any energy? Psychological exhaustion is one of the biggest signs of burn out.
- Losing productivity. You may have burnout to blame for your performance slipping. If you’re spending more time doing tasks that used to be a breeze, you may be burnt.
- Self-sabotaging. If you’re knowingly setting yourself up for failure or letting work stack up so high you know you’ll never finish, your burn out could end up getting you fired.
- Feel guilty for relaxing. If every time you’re just chilling, you can’t help but feel like you should be doing work that’s a warning sign as well.
Hopefully, these didn’t resonate with you, but if they did and you think your burnout, here’s what you should do to help yourself.
- Reduce your workload. It’s simple. You’re being overworked so you need to cut back on your workload. Cut down on the side hustles and take back control of your time.
- Detach from work. Save work for the office and disconnect when you’re home. Stop trying to make yourself available 24/7 and make time to relax.
- Take a break. If you feel like you can’t detach even when your home, you may have to detach from your home as well. Go take a real vacation and get away from all the stress.
