North Carolina Mom Sparks Debate By Sleeping In Daughter’s Dorm Her 1st Night At College
A North Carolina mom recently took her daughter to college for her freshman year, but instead of driving away after delivering the last box to her dorm room, she stayed. According to Today, Lori Miggins brought her 18-year-old daughter, Taylor, to Appalachian State University early for cheerleading practice and her roommate wasn’t arriving until the next week. So the mom spent the night with Taylor in her dorm room.
“I wanted her to sleep over,” the teen says. “We’re just so close and I didn’t want to be alone.” Taylor is the oldest child and the idea of the separation from her leaving home has been hard on both mother and daughter. Their sleepover at the dorm was fun for both of them and Taylor says it helped her anxiety a lot to have her mom there for longer.
I personally think the relationship this mother/daughter has is beautiful and I hope I have a similar relationship with my boys as they get older. I’m not sure why these keyboard warriors feel the need to judge this close-knit relationship when it seems to work for both mother and daughter. Some are seeing a helicopter parent when I just see a great mom who truly cares for her kid.
Lori says that extra time allowed her to help get her daughter acclimated, they met the dorm’s RA and ate in the dining hall together. While it was a great experience for the two of them, when the mom posted about iton Instagram, sharing a clip of their slumber party, people slammed her for staying.
What are people saying about this North Carolina Mom?
- “Absolutely not. First, this just gives me the ick. Second, I love my daughters and missed them like crazy when I dropped them off at college, but their first night at college is to meet new friends and start living independently,” one person wrote. “You gave them roots, now give them wings.”
- “This is gross and weird. Have some boundaries,” another posted. “Say goodbye to your kid and go and cry in the car like everyone else.”
- “I’ve worked in every level of college and university admissions and advising,” a third shares. “I can tell you that this is a terrible idea.”
- But some people thought it was a sweet thing to do, like a commenter who posted, “This is the best. I wish my Momma could have.”
- And another wrote, ‘I actually think this is beautiful. It’s one night. They’re blessed to have this together.”
