New North Carolina Weather Outlook is Interesting
We’ve made it to that final stretch of winter in North Carolina. Although, aside from a few January storms, it didn’t feel much like winter across the United States this year. Not that I’m complaining. I’d be happy to live in a climate with no snow and ice all year long. But, the good news is that spring is coming up in about a month. So, we just have to get through these last few weeks of winter. Let’s get into the three-month North Carolina weather outlook and why it’s so interesting.
The National Weather Service Climate Prediction Center (CPC) releases maps showing the probability of temperatures and precipitation being above or below normal conditions. As they explain on their website, “The CPC also makes available versions of these outlooks giving temperature (degrees Fahrenheit) and precipitation (inches) for the lower 48 states by climate regions (Probability of Exceedence), analysis and outlooks of tropical Pacific sea surface temperatures (SSTs) which indicate El Niño or La Niña episodes, and skill scores of the CPC outlooks.” I always look at the three-month forecasts, as they show a general trend for the next quarter of the year, in terms of above or below normal temperatures and precipitation. Their latest forecast is for February, March and April 2024.
So, let’s get into the North Carolina weather outlook. The three-month outlook gives most of North Carolina either a “leaning above” chance of having above normal temperatures or an equal chance or having above or below temperatures. So, that’s not too exciting. But, precipitation is another thing. The forecast gives most of North Carolina “leaning above” chance of having more precipitation than we usually do. So, we’re looking at a a normal few months temperature-wise, but possibly wetter. Now can I start planting my spring flowers? Probably too early for that.
