North Carolina’s Best Small Town Restaurant
I often make the trek on the backroads from Charlotte to Raleigh. That journey takes you past some small towns. And while I’m typically a “don’t stop unless it’s absolutely necessary” traveler I often look at some of the nonchain restaurants I pass and think “I bet that place is good”. Unfortunately, if I do stop it’s almost always going to be somewhere with a drive-through as I just want to get home or to my destination. But these types of restaurants are almost always delicious. So when I stumbled across this article about the best small-town restaurants in each state I was intrigued.
The list comes from Taste of Home. And their pick for the best small-town restaurant in North Carolina? It’s Nick’s Old Fashion Hamburger House in Welcome, NC. You’ve caught my interest for sure now as I love a good burger, especially an old-fashioned burger. I’d pick a diner burger over a fancy $20 one every day no matter the cost. Everything at Nick’s is cooked fresh to order. And a quick glance at social media for the spot looks incredible. You can get anything from a single cheeseburger to the Intimidator (5 patties). There are also specialty burgers like the Pimento and Noah Burger.
Everything at Nick’s is made using fresh, never-frozen local meats that are hand-rolled each day. The chili, ranch, and Thousand Island are all made in-house daily. Seriously these burgers look SO good. You’ll find this small town restaurant and Welcome near Lexington and the Triad area of the state. I’m now trying to figure out when and how I can pay this place a visit! View the full menu and learn more about Nick’s here.

The Best Restaurants In Each City & Town In North Carolina
The best restaurant is a bold claim to make. Obviously, I have not eaten at every restaurant in every North Carolina city and town. So I dug through Yelp reviews to help me out. Because you deserve to know what the best is, whether it’s your city, a nearby place, or somewhere you’re planning a trip. Many of the restaurants included on this list are hidden gems you may not have even heard of. Others are staples that everyone knows! There are 50 cities and towns included on this list and these are the 50 cities and towns in the state according to Wikipedia. You’ll find them listed from smallest to largest along with the best restaurants in that North Carolina city or town.
As for the restaurants, I consulted Yelp for each city and town included on this list. Reviews were sorted by the highest rated and the restaurant had to have an address in that specific city. Food trucks were omitted as well as a few coffee shops that didn’t offer food other than a couple of pastries. Not all the places included have sit-down meals but you can get a full meal at all of them. You’ll find a wide variety of restaurants including bbq, southern homestyle, Italian, and even Portuguese. Hopefully, this inspires you to check out a new place this weekend.
If you think another spot in your town deserves this title, well then you’ll have to give them a good review! Know that Yelp reviews are ever-changing so depending on when you are reading this a new restaurant could have taken the title on the platform. Do you think these are the best restaurants in North Carolina?
