Dreaming Of A White Christmas… These North Carolina Places Offer You The Best Chance
What I wouldn’t give to see a white Christmas just once. Though truth be told if given the choice I may pick snow for New Year’s over snow for Christmas. My birthday is New Year’s Day and for so many years all I wanted for my birthday was snow. We’ve gotten it a couple of times on January 2nd in Charlotte but I’m still waiting on one of those holidays. And in Charlotte, it is certainly possible but not probable. But while the chances are slim in the major cities, a white Christmas is a possibility in some places in North Carolina.
Our friends at BetCarolina conducted research on the possibility of a white Christmas and where in North Carolina it could happen. They also looked to find out how many people truly are dreaming of the white Christmas. According to their research, 64% of North Carolinians are hoping for just that. You can lump me into that percentage. Nationwide that places North Carolina 14th out of 50 states when it comes to the desire for holiday snow. South Carolina was 17th.
So where are the top 5 places with the highest chance of having a white Christmas in North Carolina? It should be pretty obvious that it’s in the mountains!
- Mount Mitchell (42,5% chance)
- Flat Springs (23.8%)
- Swannanoa (17.7%)
- Boone (16.1%)
- Marshall (11.3%)
While none of those odds are great by any means, but certainly better than the cities. Those odds- Raleigh (3.1%), Durham (2.3%), and Charlotte (1.4%). So noted, I won’t get my hopes up. But there is A chance. To create these percentages BetCarolina utilized data from Climate.gov that shows how often these places received snow on December 25th between 1991 and 2020.
Thanks to our friends at BetCarolina for sharing their research with us. Merry Christmas Charlotte and all of North Carolina!
This Is North Carolina's Favorite Christmas Movie
It’s the most wonderful time of the year! Time to throw on our favorite Christmas movies over and over again. Today’s Home Owner has come up with each state’s favorite Christmas movie. The classic flick; “A Christmas Story” is the most popular Christmas movie in America, according to the study. 24 states in total have that movie as its favorite. This is also North Carolina’s favorite Christmas movie according to the results.
I checked out the whole map of the country. There weren’t any real surprises. Maybe one the weirdest things comes from the state of Indiana. That state likes “Elf” over “A Christmas Story.” Why is that weird? Well “A Christmas Story” takes place in the fake town of Hohman, Indiana! Sooo it should be a favorite of theirs!
“Elf,” starring SNL alumn Will Farrell, wasn’t far behind “A Christmas Story.” It was the holiday favorite in 11 states. Buddy the Elf’s Christmas spirit is way over the top in the film. That gives fans across America plenty of quotable moments.
Another classic Christmas movie is “Home Alone,” a favorite in four states, followed by “It’s a Wonderful Life” a favorite in three. “Die Hard” and “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” tied with two states ranking it as their favorite Christmas movie.
Even though “A Christmas Story” was the favorite in most states, the overall percentages between the movies were much closer. “Elf” was just 1.6 percentage points behind, and “Home Alone” was less than 4% away from the top spot despite being the top in only four states.
If cartoons are your thing, you have good company: 4.1% of Americans chose “A Charlie Brown Christmas” and “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” as their favorite Christmas flicks. My favorite cartoon? “The Year Without Santa. Hands down.” Who doesn’t love the Mizer Brothers?
Where is Christmas Vacation in all of this? It came in #1 in only one state, Nebraska!
Here’s the top movies from each state.
