Everything is more expensive these days, including higher education.  But, free college tuition is soon to be guaranteed at this South Carolina university.  And, it's really quite simple to take advantage of with a few minor qualifiers.  But, what a gift it will be for those who qualify!

First of all, I bet you wonder which university in South Carolina we're talking about.  Well, the South Carolina school offering free college tuition guaranteed is none other than Coastal Carolina University in Conway, near Myrtle Beach.  According to Coastal Carolina University, the Coastal Commitment initiative guarantees admission and free tuition to South Carolina students who graduate in the top 10% of their high school class.  Plus, the students' annual family income must be less than $80,000.  Also, the students get an invitation to HTC Honors College without having to submit a separate application.

And, guaranteed admission to this top achieving percentage of South Carolina high school students isn't new.  That's been in place since 2014.  However, the free tuition is the key change.  And, I'd say that's a huge change.  Also, according to university stats, more than 350 Coastal Carolina students currently enrolled were South Carolina residents in the top 10% of their class.

According to the school's website, the Coastal Commitment combines existing federal and state aid as well as donor and other scholarships.  The university estimates funding $1 million to support it.  And, they indicate the initiative "demonstrates CCU's commitment to making higher education affordable and attainable."

Our son is a senior at the school.  And,  if this were a thing way back when we chose our home it might have influenced where we lived.  Halfway into his university experience we did make a move to South Carolina and finally changed our status to "in state."  And, it made a difference.  So, kudos to Coastal for making free college tuition guaranteed for these qualifying students.

And even compared to in-state tuition in other states such as South Carolina, they are relatively affordable. But which North Carolina universities have the cheapest tuition?

This data comes to us from US News and World Report, which released its 2024 Best Colleges Rankings this week. These reports and lists cover a variety of factors from best overall, regional, liberal arts, and best value schools. To create this list of the North Carolina universities with the cheapest tuition I filtered by North Carolina and then sorted the results by cost. This gave me a combination of the public and private universities and cost was filtered by out-of-state. But for your info, I ranked each school by the reported (by US News) tuition cost for in-state students at each of the public universities in NC.

There are 16 public universities in the state. Each of these are incredible unique universities with lots to offer potential students. You'll find a profile of each of them below with the tuition as reported by US News in order of least expensive to most expensive. Though even the most expensive is less than $10,000.
