North Carolina Airport Ranks Best In North America For Wait Times

The experience you have at an airport can make or break your travel plans, especially in North Carolina. While some airports offer quality retail and dining options, others feature impressive architecture and amenities. But when you’re really just trying to get from one location to another, being on time is what matters. A new study reveals which airports are doing the best job with wait times and which ones aren’t.

  • Casago, a rental property management company, analyzed passenger reviews on airlinequality.com that rate wait times for check-in, baggage drop and pickup, customs and more on a scale of one to five stars.
  • The airports that have the highest percentage of positive reviews in North America for wait times are all in the U.S., while the ones with lower ratings are spread out in different countries.
  • The Southwest Florida International Airport in Fort Myers tops the list as the best for wait times, with 66.67% of four to five-star reviews.
  • While it’s not the largest airport in the state, it’s currently the second-busiest single-runway airport in the U.S., according to Travel Lens.
  • The worst airport in North America based on wait times is the Sangster International Airport near Montego Bay, Jamaica.
  • It’s the biggest of Jamaica’s three international airports and 72% of visitors to the country use it as their primary airport, according to the Jamaica Civil Aviation Authority.

Charlotte Douglas International Airport Is The 7th Busiest In The World New Data Shows

Yes, you read that correctly. New data shows that Charlotte Douglas International Airport is the 7th busiest airport, not in the US but worldwide. This data comes from Airports Council International who recently released their yearly rankings. This is based on data from 2022. They actually rank the busiest airports based on a few different metrics this includes lists calculated by the following:

  • Passengers (total passengers enplaned and deplaned counting passengers in transit one time)
  • International Passengers (total international passengers enplaned and deplaned)
  • Cargo (loaded and unloaded freight and mail including transit freight)
  • International Freight  (international freight loaded and unloaded including transit freight)
  • Aircraft Movements (landings and takeoffs)

So which one of these did Charlotte Douglas International Airport rank 7th in? The last one – aircraft movements. This is actually down two spots from 2021 when CLT ranked 5th. In 2022 505,589 flights took off or landed in Charlotte. That’s a lot of planes. I was on a few of them but nowhere near that amount! One thing I found interesting about this data is that for both total passengers as well as aircraft movements these lists are very top-heavy with US cities. Atlanta took both of those titles. This confirms that while that drive to Atlanta from Charlotte is terrible, it’s probably better than flying!
