When your bills come in every month, do you find yourself complaining about how the cost of living has gone up again? It’s not just you, the average cost of living has gone up 8.1% in 2022, according to this year’s Worldwide Cost of Living Index, which was just released by Economist Intelligence Unit.
The report ranks the most expensive cities in the world to live in. There are three U.S. cities in the top 10. Topping the list this year is New York City, and although it seems like it should have been in first place before, this is the first year it is, albeit in a tie with Singapore, a frequent winner. Los Angeles is also tied for fourth with Hong Kong and San Francisco is eighth on the list. Last year’s most expensive city, Tel Aviv, Israel, fell to third place this year.
As for how “The Economist” comes up with their list, they do it by comparing prices on more than 200 everyday products and services in 172 cities around the world every March and September. They survey various businesses, both high and low end, to get an idea of how much prices have changed over the last year.
