‘Once Upon a One More Time:’ A Britney Spears Musical Coming 2023

Here's a fun bit news on Britney Spears' birthday today (December 2). A musical titled Once Upon a One More Time, based on Britney's songs, is coming to Broadway in 2023. Per Variety, the fantasy show is a reimagining of classic fairytale characters like Cinderella, Snow White and Ariel from The Little Mermaid. “Once Upon a One More Time” will feature the pop star's discography -- including songs like “Oops I Did It Again,” “Lucky,” “Circus” and “Toxic.”

Award-winning hip-hop choreography couple Keone and Mari Madrid directed the musical, which was originally developed and produced by Shakespeare Theatre Company, Washington D.C., where the show generated mixed reviews. The Washington Post’s Peter Marks called it a “frustratingly rushed sensation,” adding, “While it lacks finesse, lead performer Briga Heelan brings out the show’s potential.” The show will begin previews at Broadway’s Marquis Theatre ahead of opening night on June 22, 2023. Casting has yet to be announced.

Spears, who celebrates her 42nd birthday today, has not yet commented on the musical, but she has previously voiced that she did not want a documentary made about her. Last month, Stranger Things star Millie Bobby Brown said that one of her biggest career goals is to portray “a real person and I think for me, Britney, would be [it] — Britney Spears.” The young star said that she connects with the singer through their shared experience of being in the spotlight at such a young age. “I think her story, first of all, resonates with me just growing up in the public eye. Watching her videos, watching interviews of her when she was younger. Same thing with you; I see the scramble for words [in the interviews],” explained Brown. “I don’t know her, but when I look at pictures of her, I feel like I could tell her story in the right way and hers only.” A day after Brown said that, Spears took to Instagram to make it clear she does not want any movies made about her. She wrote: “I hear about people wanting to do movies about my life … dude I’m not dead !!!”

Yesterday, Spears posted a video of herself dancing to "Feeling Myself Remix" writing in the caption, "Diff edit !!! Feeling myself and with my hair up messy !!! Nasty I like it !!! Feeling myself !!! Psss I be feeling my white shirt !!!"

Probably the most 2000s-sounding song, "Stronger's" music video embodies all of the aspects of the era as well. From the futuristic white and silver outfits to Britney dancing solo with a steel chair, there's a lot of iconic imagery. It shows why she's a legend as a singer and dancer. And of course, they incorporated a rain scene.

We would absolutely die for Britney's luxe pink robe in "Lucky." She's channeling old Hollywood glamour here. The video's plot: Brit plays a lonely successful star, Lucky. It does hit a bit close to home, as the singer later went through personal problems in the public eye.

She sure knows how to do product placement in this video, from her perfume line to Bulgari jewelry. Our favorite part of the video is when flames surround Britney and her dancers and elephants join in. The 2008 dance track is a metaphor for the public's perception of Spears' life.

Everyone in this video is a hot, sweaty mess. That doesn't seem to bother Britney, though, who wears a pink thong over leather pants -- an iconic look. The 2001 song was written by Pharrell Williams and has become one of Spears' signature hits, and is considered one of the defining pop songs of the early 2000s.

Fun fact: the video was shot at Venice High School in Los Angeles, which was the setting for Rydell High in the movie Grease. Britney went intergalactic with this one. Her red patent leather jumpsuit went down as one of the most iconic looks in pop music video history. During its bridge, Spears delivers a spoken-word dialogue that references the blockbuster hit from a few years prior, Titanic.

Buckle up, since flight attendant Britney is up to no good, taking one lucky passenger for a trip to "the mile-high club." Her nude, bejeweled catsuit was shocking for the era. It was something only she could pull off. Finally, Britney was blessed to ride on the back of a motorcycle with supermodel Tyson Beckford, before she backflips off superhero style. "Toxic" is by far her most iconic music video to date -- and it cost $1,000,000 to make.
