Is Netflix affecting your sex life? It might be says USA Today! How much Netflix do you watch? For most of us, watching TV is something we do all the time. Netflix and other streaming services have become a part of our daily lives. But relationship therapist Sara Kuburic questions whether we’re paying attention to how TV is actually affecting our relationships. And it turns out, most of us are not.
Kuburic shares five things we should consider about TV viewing.
- Is it impacting your sex life? – The relationship expert isn’t saying “don’t stream,” she’s just pointing out that when we say yes to watching a 30-minute show. We’re saying no to doing something else at that time, like having sex. Kuburic notes that many couples feel too exhausted for intimacy after eating all their snacks and watching “just one more episode.” So it’s important to know whether sex or other things are being neglected in your relationship as a result of your viewing habits.
- Is it all you do together – We have to be intentional about our relationships and our shows can sometimes get in the way of that. “And let’s be clear,” Kuburic says, “this is not our TV’s fault, it’s the way we choose to consume it.”
- Why are you watching so much TV together? – If Netflix is one of the things you do together, great. But if it’s the only thing you do together, this expert says we should ask why.
- What is the content teaching you about relationships? – Kuburic explains that all the time we spend watching TV affects our opinions and beliefs. That can start to set unrealistic expectations for our relationships. She advises checking in with your partner and evaluating the impact watching has on your expectations.
