The Weeknd: HBO Announces Significant Changes To ‘The Idol’
The Weeknd’s drama series The Idol will be undergoing significant changes Variety has reported.
“‘The Idol’s’ creative team continues to build, refine, and evolve their vision for the show and they have aligned on a new creative direction,” HBO said in a statement to the outlet. “The production will be adjusting its cast and crew accordingly to best serve this new approach to the series. We look forward to sharing more information soon.”
The series is co-created by The Weekend alongside Sam Levison and Reza Fahim. The Idol is “set against the backdrop of the music industry, centers on a self-help guru and leader of a modern-day cult, who develops a complicated relationship with an up-and-coming pop idol.”
Lily Rose-Depp was cast in September, and in November, HBO greenlit the series.
According to sources per the outlet, production was completed on several episodes of the six-episode series. Those will now be redone due to the change in creative direction by the network, the outlet reports.
HBO declined to comment on which cast and crew members are leaving the production, Variety reports.
