Man Who Had To Drop Out Of School In 1938 Gets His Diploma
A 101-year-old man now has his high school diploma after a more than 80 year wait.
Merrill Pittman Cooper had to drop out of Storer College in West Virginia when he moved to Philadelphia in 1938 with his mother. His family reached out to Jefferson County Schools after Cooper told them he regretted never graduating.
That led to the district presenting Cooper with an honorary diploma. The district’s superintendent said they’re honored to help make Cooper’s dream a reality.
Despite not having a diploma, Cooper was very successful in the transportation industry in Philadelphia, even becoming union vice president.
