Mom Turns Son’s Braces Into Christmas Ornament
We love a good homemade Christmas ornament, but one mom found an interesting source of inspiration for her craftiness – her son’s braces. That son, Austin, who is now 23, shares the story of his mom turning his recently removed braces into a Christmas ornament she still hangs on the tree every year.
In a TikTok video, Austin explains as a teenager, he had braces for four-and-a-half years and when he finally had them taken off, the orthodontist put the used metal braces on a tray. As she started to throw them away, his mom stopped her and said, “Uh, no.” And like any teen would be, he was totally embarrassed and asked his mom, “What are you doing?” He recalls that his mom responded, “Austin, we paid $6-thousand for those braces. I’m not letting her throw them away.”

But this mama didn’t just stick them in a keepsake box in the attic. She used them as garland on a Christmas tree ornament, with the shiny metal braces zig-zagging across the evergreen. And on the back, she memorialized the occasion, writing, “Austin’s braces removed, 12-16-2014.” It seems like he’s still embarrassed by it, as he says, “Are you kidding?” at the end of the clip while showing off her handiwork. But people in the comments section really seem to like the sentimental ornament:
- “That’s kinda awesome,” one TikToker writes. “Wish my mom did that with mine!”
- “That’s a cool ornament,” posts another.
- And a third writes, “That’s the most creative way I’ve ever seen anyone reuse braces.”
