Oprah’s Life Coach On How To Be Much Happier
Would you agree that Oprah Winfrey is a happy woman? Did you know that she has much more help in that department than just her financial advisor? Oprah has Harvard-trained sociologist Martha Beck working as her “life coach” and now you do too! Kind of… Beck has dropped some of her biggest tips on how to be happier. Here’s some to help you channel your inner Oprah.
Life Is Short, Don’t Waste It Pretending To Be Something You’re Not. According to Beck, you need to start following your gut more and being led by societal expectations less. Clearly, her message has resonated with people since her books with titles like “Finding Your Own North Star” and “Steering By Starlight” have made her a best-selling author. And do you need any other proof than Oprah’s success to make you a believer?
“Burn every bridge but truth.” According to Beck, the thousands of people she’s worked with have all been afraid of leaving jobs they hate simply because they’re nervous about the alternative. “Most people think they’re all about happiness. But ask them to drop what doesn’t make them happy? Suddenly fear comes in” says Beck. The solution isn’t an easy one but it’s the only one. You need to leave the relationship or job that’s making you unhappy. Full stop. You can’t get on to finding happiness until you do.
Reconnect With People. Here’s your Beck-approved homework for the weekend that she says has helped people “ increase happiness across the board.” Write a letter of gratitude to someone you’re grateful to. A friend, a family member, a teacher, a colleague… pick one and start writing. Then call them and read it to them. You’ll feel great and they’ll feel amazing.
