Why You Don’t Need To Explain Your Reason For Taking A Day Off
Does your job require you to write-in a “reason” when you hand in a time off sheet? Ever wonder why your boss and human resources need to know what you’re doing on your vacation days? Here’s the thing… they don’t. And that’s why there is a growing movement for employees to start leaving that section blank.
Twitter user @LocalAnxiousBae went viral for tweeting out “normalize not telling your boss what your day off is for,” and the experts are on her side. Career coach Keni Dominguez says “how you choose to spend your vacation or paid time off is your choice and does not require an explanation.” It doesn’t matter what it’s for, it’s your time off to do whatever you want with it. Even if you just want to take a day off to literally do nothing. You’ve earned that day and they don’t need to know about it.
It’s just another piece of the American vacation time system that needs adjusting. Did you know we’re the only developed country in the world without a single legally required paid vacation day? Meanwhile, every country in the European Union has at least four work weeks of paid vacation by law. Four weeks! And you can bet they don’t tell their boss that they need a day to go to the doctor.
