Signs You Might Be a Drama Queen
Every friends’ group has at least one drama queen, and if you’re thinking not mine… maybe it’s you. And if you just got upset about getting called out, it’s definitely you. But for real, here are some of the reasons why people crave drama:
- Attention. The urge to stir the pot with people could simply come from a need to be noticed. Psychologist Claire Jack says “creating drama is one way of gaining attention by sharing funny or scary stories with other people.” And obviously they want a good story to capture their next audience’s attention, so when drama hits, they turn it up to 11 to make sure things get juicy.
- Learned behavior. Jack explains that sometimes drama queens are “raised by a narcissistic or borderline parent” and adopt their behaviors as their own. Fingers crossed that at least one of your parents was chill.
- Self-destructive behaviors. The need for drama could be the result of previous trauma. Jack says some drama queens have suffered emotional, physical, or sexual abuse, and living in a constant state of dilemma stems from the low self-esteem they have from it. Basically, they don’t feel good about themselves, so they lash out, which keeps them feeling unhappy, and the cycle continues. So before you write off your friend as a “disaster,” consider their history and maybe cut them some slack.
