Malaysian Govt Tells Women To Dress Up & Stop Nagging Husbands
What the what!? Staying at home to help stop the spread of the coronavirus may be a drag for us, but at least we’re not in Malaysia. The government there is facing criticism for telling women to dress up while at home during the country’s partial lockdown and to avoid nagging their husbands.
Posters circulated by Malaysia’s women’s affairs ministry offered advice on how to avoid domestic conflicts while self-isolating. One illustration tells women not to be “sarcastic” if they need help with household chores and another suggests women stop “nagging” their husbands. The ministry also advised women to dress up and wear makeup while working from home.
As you might expect, the posters sparked backlash immediately and critics called the government out for sexism and promoting gender stereotypes. The posters were shared on Facebook and Instagram and social media users urged the government to take them down, and while the government hasn’t commented on the controversy, many of the original posts have now been removed.
