Roy Can’t Fix Any Household Problems
It’s nice that we’re always one YouTube clip from learning how to do nearly anything, but are we becoming too reliant on it?
I realized over the weekend that I absolutely cannot fix anything, and if I do fix it, it’s because I googled it or watched an installation video on YouTube. A new survey shows 38% of people say they’d be helpless and unable to fix any common household problems without the help of the Internet. So if a toilet starts overflowing the same time our router goes down? We’re in big trouble.
I can fix a clogged drain, because a god invented Drano, but ask me to find a stud, patch some drywall, or fix a leaky faucet, and I’m lost. Luckily, I found a study where nearly half of those surveyed aged 18-24 admitted they can’t fix their own home. So I’m not alone!
Almost all of the people over the age of 65 surveyed were able to do at least one of the aforementioned tasks without Siri, Alexa, or Google. So, Congratulations Boomer?
Over the holiday my furnace kept going out. It almost derailed my Christmas travel plans because I did not feel comfortable leaving my house with a broken furnace. When the furnace went out, all I knew how to do was flip the breaker off and then turned it back on, which didn’t fix it. I couldn’t even take the front door of my furnace off, that seemed too hard. My house got as cold as 48 degrees and I had to go to Home Depot to buy a bunch of electric heaters. Luckily, after two different HVAC companies, we finally fixed it! (Maybe).
