  The hip-hop community was swept with grief in March of 2019 when Nipsey Hussle was fatally shot outside of his apparel store The Marathon Clothing in Los Angeles.

• Women In Hip-Hop Befriending Each Other & Collaborating

  Throughout 2019, many women in hip-hop befriended each other and also collaborated on many singles. Houston's Megan Thee Stallion who was hip-hop's 2019 buzziest newcomer embraced many of her peers and the energy just seemed to spread like a wildfire.

• Jermaine Dupri’s Sexist Commentary Regarding Women Rappers

  In July of 2019, Jermaine Dupri sat down for an interview with People TV to discuss his new project. During the interview, the producer likened current women rappers to strippers, which sent the hip-hop community and social media users into a frenzy. “The only reason why I can’t say is because I feel they’re all rapping about the same things. I don’t think they’re showing us who’s the best rapper. I think they’re trying to show⁠—for me, it’s like strippers rapping,” Dupri said.

• Film Director John Singleton’s Death

  Many from the hip-hop community mourned director John Singleton when news broke that he had passed this year after suffering a stroke. Celebrities including Ice Cube, Tyrese, and Regina King took to social media to honor the director.

• Lil Kim Says She’s Passed The Torch To Cardi B: ‘She’s Got The Crown’

  In October of 2019, Lil Kim announced that she was passing the torch to Bronx rapper Cardi B. “I would leave that to Cardi. Cardi said she wanted to do something like that, so let her pick. She’s got the crown,” Lil Kim said after she was asked who she would pick to do a new version of her Grammy Award-winning collaboration “Lady Marmalade" by Build.
