Shawn Mendes Gets Called Out by Fan For Old Tweets
A while back, Shawn Mendes was under fire for some racist tweet on his account from before he was famous. According to Cosmopolitan, Mendes had tweets that said “Light skinned girls>>,” “I’m black, burnt up ya knoe,” and even a photo with the caption “A regular day with mah n*gger Kareem.” The deleted posts can still be seen on Live Journal.
Recently the singer was doing a live Q&A, and a fan asked him about the tweets. To summarize, she wanted to know why he has never acknowledged these previous hurtful and ignorant tweets.
He responded with this answer:
“A lot of things just need to be moved on from, but I also think that the things that were saw, like I had friends when I was 14 who would like take my phone and like post things of them because they thought it was funny that I had like 2,000 followers and it was a big thing, and they’d post photos of themselves, and at the time I was just like not thinking about it. I had no idea I was going to have 50 million followers, which doesn’t make it any better. But um, yeah I totally apologize for everything insensitive I said in the past, but with that being said, yeah, I think that’s not my personality.
Some fans were in his corner; others weren’t. One fan tweeted, “The fact that he refuses to take responsibility and blames it on ‘friends’ is incredibly immature and pathetic.” Another wrote that Mendes was the “king of excuses.”
