Today is World Elephants Day!
Producer Nicole went to Thailand not too long ago and visited an Elephant Sanctuary in Phuket, Thailand.
Growing up you’ve seen the movie Dumbo, you’ve probably been brought to zoos and a circus a time or two. Growing up all of that seems fun. That changes when you’re an adult. At least it did for me. There is no denying that I love animals but when I grew up and I learned more about the pain we inflict on them I knew something had to be done. There is only so much one person can do, but I have done my best to reduce my carbon footprint, I don’t support zoos or the circus, etc.
One of the things that I was looking forward to the most about visiting Thailand was knowing that I would be in Asia and would have the opportunity to see elephants in their natural habitat. Little did I know…that wasn’t so easy. I did my research and I learned so much about elephants in Asia. A lot of places in Thailand let you ride elephants, make them do tricks, etc. THIS IS BAD! Yeah, it looks really cool on Instagram but watching videos of how they train the elephants to do all of that…let’s just say if you knew, you wouldn’t want to do it.
With that being said, I found “Phuket Elephant Sanctuary.” It’s literally a sanctuary for elephants who have had a tough life. People are allowed to visit them and watch them in their natural habitat, but that is it.
It was life-changing that is for sure.
